Youth Food Literacy Initiative
The Youth Food Literacy Initiative is a series of FREE workshops centered around food literacy and food justice. This program aims to increase food literacy by educating youth about various parts of our local food system, such as food production/harvesting, food preparation, and food waste.
Sessions will include learning through hands-on workshops:
tours of local farms and walks through forest trails
working with plants, identifying plants, and cooking with plants
learning about the local ecology, native plants, and local food systems
discussions on food justice and youth empowerment
relationship-building
There will be a workshop every Friday from July 21, 2023, to August 11, 2023. Each weekly session will focus on one area of the food system and provide an opportunity for youth to gain a deeper understanding of their place in our food system. Sessions will be led by local farmers, growers, and community organizations/leaders so that participants can connect with community members who are directly involved in the food system. Additionally, participants will learn how each area of the food system interacts with, reinforces, and supports the others. Through these sessions, participants will gain greater agency in their food choices and interactions with food (such as knowing how to prepare and cook food, or decreasing their food waste) and learn about ongoing measures being taken to sustainably connect with the land.
