Meeting with School Food Shift & Potluck

In this session we will be gathering to share in a potluck and talk with Sam Gambling from the BC Coalition for Healthy School Food about our experiences with food in our schools and some of the changes that we want to see made in our school’s food programs. This session will help to inform Sam’s efforts to create a national school food program I encourage you all to bring some of your ideas to the gathering, or even make some of the foods you want to see and bring them for the potluck!

Whether directly through gardening and gathering, or in other ways, we will look at how the health of our food system directly impacts our own health and that of our communities. We will also discuss other ways of engaging with our food system, through art, community building, knowledge sharing and cooking. Snacks will be provided but folks are also encouraged to bring some food to share if they are interested!

In this session we will come together to discuss some of the current legislation in place surrounding climate action in BC and in our region. We will review a short report and discuss somethings that we were surprised by, things we are frustrated by, or commitments that we feel need to be improved upon. Throughout this conversation we will also be discussing some of the ways that climate change and actions surrounding us have taken a toll on our mental, emotional, and physical capacities to take action. We will close off the session with some ways to avoid climate action burnout and hopefully mitigate some of our anxieties surrounding climate change.

Good Food Summit Youth Stream

The Good Food Summit is creating a Youth Stream!

It will consist of workshops and an evening event for all youth interested in our food system. This will make the Good Food Summit accessible for youth as well as create exposure to all the inspiring people and work being done in the capital region’s food system.

We will be running an evening event on Wednesday November 20th and two workshops on Friday November 22nd on the day of the main conference gathering specifically for youth. Our evening event will be hosted at the Victoria Event Center from 4-6pm in conjunction with Just Transition Arts to create an evening of art building around food justice. The workshops will be hosted by the ICA (inter-cultural association) and the UVic Campus Community Garden.

Tickets are $20 for youth and students, they grant entrance to the whole event on Friday including a delicious lunch!

Solstice Mixer

Join us in learning how to make your own herbal first aid kit, and enjoy a house cooked meal!

This is one of the Youth Food Network's seasonal get-togethers! Doors open at 4 pm at the Fernwood NRG. We will be in the gymnasium, and if it's nice, spilling outside as well! 

The feature of the evening will be a workshop with Rebecca Signe, a registered herbalist. She will lead us through a herbal first aid kit making workshop! This will be hands-on and you will learn of the medicinal properties in the plants. 

There is also an incredible dinner being served! Buddha bowls!!! 
Enjoy this vegan gluten-free friendly meal with other youth that love food. :) We will close up the event at 9 pm. 

Our sliding scale means you pay what you can! The $20 is to cover the cost of ingredients for dinner and supplies for the workshop. If you can't pay that much, we have as low as a $5 registration fee, or you can sign up to volunteer below. Tickets will also be sold at the door. 

If both time and money is a barrier, email us to let us know and we'll get you a free ticket. :)

Note: this event is meant for youth between the ages of 14-24 residing in the Capital Region District. If you are an educator please email us to see if there is space!

Youth Food Network Winter Mixer

This mixer is one of our seasonal gatherings, taking place at the Fernwood NRG! Join us for this exciting event involving a local/reclaimed food dinner, networking opportunities with other members, an introduction to teams for you to get involved in, and a workshop with the Luna Collective!

Doors will open at 4 pm and networking/presentations start at 4:30. Snacks and drinks provided. Email us if you would like to tell the group about a foodie project you are working on!

Dinner will be served at 5:30 pm! David, our amazing chef will work with Katherine, a YFN member to cook dinner. Katherine has been working with David on making Student Dinner happen every Wednesday night! (Vegan/GF options available.)

At 6:30 we will start upcycling! Bring an old apron, tea cozy, pair of oven mitts, loose fabric, t-shirt, pants, backpack, tote bag, or lunch kit. What will you do with it? Sew a foodie patch, mend a hole, make it better than it was before! Do all this while sipping on some peppermint tea.

December Workshop: Exploring the Downtown Food Scene (Scavenger Hunt)

This is our first of many workshops folks! We wanted to do something casual, fun and informative, so here it is! Some of you may have participated in the workshop hosted at our Youth Food Conference that followed the same idea-a scavenger hunt for you to explore and get to know the downtown food scene. 

The most exciting part? There are prizes!!! Be one of our 3 winning teams and you might receive a gift card to West Coast refills, and other stores on the list of places to check out during the hunt.

Teams will be in pairs of two, so bring a friend or be prepared to meet a new one!

Join us for this annual gathering of food security champions! This year, we are excited to gather with folks from across Vancouver Island and the Gulf Islands. Our theme is 'Nourishing Island Connections' and our priority areas include cultural safety, Indigenous foods, school food initiatives, youth engagement, rural and remote community perspectives, and collective impact. 

There are opportunities throughout the conference for youth to get together and learn about the Youth Food Network, as well as opportunities to have your voice heard at the table where decisions are made.

First Annual Youth Food Conference!

This is a big deal! The very first Youth Food Conference in the CRD!!! The official launch of the Youth Food Network, this event will be a celebration of connection making for all youth ages 14-24 in the Capital Region district. The focus is food; good food, local food, Indigenous food systems, diversity in cultural food systems, how to grow food, how we think about food, how to get involved in local food initiatives, where your food comes from, and so much more...

This event is 100% FREE! What do you get with your free ticket? 

  • 4-5 Local Based Meals (a welcome dinner, a packed lunch from Whole Foods, a breakfast with Tree Island Yogurt and Singing Bowl Granola with fresh fruit, and a house cooked lunch and maybe a bonus).
  • Access to all 3 event days (Friday 4pm-8pm, Saturday 9am-4pm, Sunday 10am-3pm)
  • Friday activities (Inspirational speakers, meal time and mingle with youth musician, youth panel, project panel, film screening)
  • Saturday activities (morning 3 hour workshop, lunch, afternoon 3 hour workshop)
